Farmers Market at the Old Cheese Factory

Farmers Market at the Old Cheese Factory

I have been back to the farmers market at the old cheese factory today. It really is a cute little market on a gorgeous property so I thought I would share my photos with you this time. Hopefully they might entice you to visit and support this great local market.

Today I bought some delicious cheese from the Tarago River Cheese Company in Neerim South (a very beautiful town in Gippsland). http://www.taragocheese.com

They had a great range of cheeses available for tasting and the guy at their little stand was friendly and informative and hospitable. It tried three of their blue cheeses and bought one, Shadows of Blue. They were all very nice and perfectly ripe but I had to save myself for one of their Brie cheeses also. They were all priced at around $35 per kg which is very reasonable for a well ripened cheese.

This Farmers Market is open on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 8am to 12.30pm.

There is a $2 donation to get into the market which for such a small, local space seems very expensive to me. Especially if you only want to stop by for a few minutes to pick up supplies.

It is lovely to have a stroll through the Berwick Market on a Winter’s morning. There were cakes and bread and pasta and fresh fruit and veg available. How gorgeous is this bunch of radish?

There were equally good looking fresh beetroot for sale at the same market stall. These beetroot were almost unrecognisable when compared with the the sad brown looking fresh beetroot I just bought myself from the supermarket the other day. A lot of the fruit and veg from this stall were selling out very fast and I can understand why.

I also bought some amazing roast potato gnocchi from http://www.albertosdelicacies.com/index.html. The ingredient list for this gnocchi is a dream; potato, flour, free range eggs, potato flakes (3%) and salt. So much better than anything you can by at the supermarket and great for those nights where you cannot be bothered making your own

Wish me luck eating all that cheese! I am sure I will be up to the task although I may need to invest in some new clothes if I do not share it with a friend.

La Baguette Cafe Berwick

La Baguette Cafe Berwick (Updated 2015)

I went for a little wander down Adams Lane in Berwick this morning and found this.

La Baguette Cafe Berwick

The very gorgeous looking La Baguette Cafe. She is a very elegant young thing. I had to go in and check it out. I am very glad I made the effort.

La Baguette is run by a husband and wife team from Berwick. They apparently decided that a French style cafe is just what we needed here in Berwick Village and I cannot disagree with them. The Cafe is beautifully appointed with a mix of share tables, couches, comfy seats and tables for two or more. Gorgeous textured wallpaper and sweetly decorated little nooks and corner spots. The Cafe is very generous in size whilst still maintaining a real warmth to its interiors.

The coffee is fair trade and locally roasted and mine was excellent! Hot, strong, bold and a little nutty. They use Fair Trade Grata Espresso coffee beans sourced from Bendigo, Victoria. Hot chocolate is by Lindt and they serve Harney and Sons Tea which is just so beautiful.

La Baguette Cafe Berwick

My gorgeous 6 year old son was my dining companion today and he was pretty good company. I am sure this was helped by the huge Iced Chocolate that he ordered and devoured with a smile. We also shared a Caramel and Hazelnut slice that was very very good.

The front counter also had on offer a beautiful array of baguette’s starting at $12 (tied up with string nonetheless) and assorted slices and pastries ($2.50- $4.20). It all looked amazing and I will return to sample more of it. I can normally eat well made baguette no matter how hungry or not I am.

La Baguette Cafe Berwick

La Baguette Cafe Berwick also sells a range of Artisan bread, baked daily by Noisette in Port Melbourne, a very popular cafe that has also gone wholesale.

Home

The menu has an includes eggs on sourdough, a range of crepes and a delicious selection of specials. I ordered the ham and cheese crepe with a micro salad and it was delicious and beautifully presented.

French Crepe's at La Baguette Cafe

La Baguette Cafe is in a beautiful little part of Berwick Village, set back off the High St and surrounded by trees and sweet laneways.

The staff here were young and enthusiastic and happy and that normally means something good is going on. So visit. Visit now! While they are still new and fresh and enthusiastic and beautifully gorgeous.

Welcome to the area La Baguette Cafe, Berwick Village just got a little bit better!

Happy Eating and let me know what you think.

“Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.”

Sometimes this little, apparently Biblical outtake, is more true than not. Today was one of those days.
I woke up like a bear with a sore head, on the wrong side of the bear cave bed (I hope you enjoyed that mishmash #DJDan). Cereal with milk at the kitchen bench was just not going to cut it so I took matters into my own hands and headed out. Destination: Primary @Pioneer Park Cafe.
As a Berwick resident for one whole year and four whole seasons I can say with confidence that Autumn and Spring are really the buzzing months for lovely old Berwick. The gardens, the tree’s, the wind, the opportunity to partake in our lovely outdoor spaces. So Primary Cafe is the perfect destination.
We got a table outside and the sun was kind enough to shine on my back and the wind was gentle enough to tickle not hassle.
Pioneer Park Cafe is the kind of posh version of having a coffee in Berwick. The restaurant was full of (mainly women) with lovely hair and lipstick and clothes made from swishy fabrics. There were also a few school Mum’s but their children were well entertained and behaved thanks to the playground that abuts the cafe’s deck.
I ordered eggs because I really needed them.
They came on very lovely wholegrain bread and they were cooked beautifully. Pre cracked pepper was available on the table and a fairly decent salt. My flat white was quite nice: nothing to complain about nothing to rave about. There was another lovely pattern in my froth that leads me to the conclusion that pictures in froth bears an inverse relationship to excellence in coffee but only at the moderate end of the spectrum. Feedback and ongoing experiments are welcome on this topic.
I have visited Pioneers Cafe before and had a similar experience; descent food and drink and lovely surroundings. The bill is always slightly more expensive that at other places in Berwick.
But sometimes, just sometimes, it doesn’t really matter.

D’Angelo Estate Vineyard

Stop the presses. I have found my favourite foodie destination in Berwick and surrounds so far.

Okay, so there are no presses anymore, but stop the blogosphere! (No, that doesn’t work……)

Today we were graced with that most wonderful of gifts, a baby sitter. So hubby and I headed out for a quick pre dinner drink. We were hoping so desperately that some sort of food would also be on offer. Our destination was D’Angelo Estate Vineyard in Officer.

I have been hearing quite a bit about this winery and I have also driven past it a number of times and so it was inevitable that I would eventually give it a try. To be honest, I was initially steering clear because I was not sure what good could come of Officer (in terms of food only of course. I do not wish to offend Dear Reader). It has a 7Eleven that my children obsess over visiting and I equally obsessive over avoiding and otherwise the only other food seems to be for horses?…..

But I was very wrong. As we turned into the driveway I pointed up to a hill that was hanging above us and said “Look at that gorgeous house, what an amazing view.” Berwick and beyond seems to be littered with these scenarios; nothing, nothing, Road, nothing, Road works, paddock, hill, beautiful sprawling countryside. Imagine my delight when it turns out, the beautiful turreted house on the hill was actually the winery we were visiting. It has amazing views from the Cellar door and even a little bit of naked David (statue only sorry). Apparently you can take in Western Port Bay and French Island on a good day from up there.

Read more about the winery here.

D’Angelo Estate Vineyard is run by a lovely family who also own vines out in the Yarra Valley. They were celebrating some sort of first birthday today (cellar door opening maybe?). We had a lovely tasting of their wine’s and we also ordered some food and overall we had an excellent time. We ordered the cheese plate but could have happily eaten anything on the small menu. The cheeses they brought out were beautiful and they were perfectly ripe. One of my gripes of living in Berwick is that I have had trouble sourcing good, ripe, interesting cheese locally. Somehow the folks at D’Angelo Estate Vineyard are managing it though. It was perfect and beautifully presented. They also had Pizza on the menu and a few tapas items.

I really look forward to going back and this time sitting in the outdoor area and taking in some of those views.

Now all we need is some sunshine.
