The Yellow Deli Katoomba

The Yellow Deli Katoomba

I recently went on a mid-Winter holiday to NSW. We took a beautiful and simple drive up through the mountains to visit the Three Sisters and while we were there we stopped for lunch at The Yellow Deli in Katoomba. The Yellow Deli Katoomba

One glance through the front window of this “tree-house” cafe and we knew we wanted to eat there. So did everyone else apparently so we were invited to wait awhile propped up under a heater on one of the outdoor tables until an indoor table became available. If the swirling fog and surrounding views were not enough to keep us happy, we were also offered a warming cup of hot apple cider while we waited. After a brief and enjoyable wait we were shown to our table “I think joy for this family.”

Yes this is not your average cafe and the tables/ nooks at the Yellow Deli cafe and separated out into areas with names.

The menu consists of sandwiches (The Reuben, The Yellow Submarine), soup of the day. Salads, All day breakfast and a lovely and extensive selection of drinks, teas and smoothies. We opted for the fresh green mate latte, another hot apple cider and a mango smoothie. The mate tea was delicious and is also  reported to have a great range of health benefits. The Yellow Deli KatoombaThe Yellow Deli Katoomba

The prices at The Yellow Deli Katoomba were very reasonable and the service was zen-like calm and helpful.

It would be remiss of me not to mention that this cafe is apparently run by some kind of local commune and their story is painted in murals on the wall. I absolutely loved our visit and so did my whole family. The food was simple, homestyle fare with a healthy twist but it was very tasty. The cafe itself was an extraordinary hobbit-ish treehouse with macrame decorations, an open fire, lots of carved timber and painted murals.FullSizeRender

Visit for the warm atmosphere and hearty, healthy food and stay for the unique service.

Happy Eating.

Yarra Valley Gateway Estate

Last weekend I was lucky enough to be taken on a very special tour through the Yarra Valley, as the guest of the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group. We were in search of good food and wine, and we found it in abundance.

fresh yarra valley produce from Gateway Estate

Orson Koch from  Yarra Valley Transfers was our chauffeur for the day. Charming and knowledgeable, he was able to fill in the landscape with tall tales, local gossip and foodie tips. He could also drive, which was very handy because we had a lot to cover.

The Yarra Valley sits in the undulating, vineyard-laced hills outside of the World’s Most liveable city, Melbourne. An easy 45 minute drive to the North East from the City, and one definitely worth taking.

Where the roads widen out and the horizon stands tall and green and proud, nestled there amongst the hills,  you will find the Yarra Valley.

I visit the Yarra Vally regularly for;

  • Wine, wineries, wandering.
  • U-pick cherries. Every November and December, without fail. Unique varietals, local, family-run farms. Amazing, intricate flavours.
  • Plump, juicy strawberries and blueberries that taste just like the ones that Grandma used to serve.

Well now I have a few more reasons to visit this beautiful part of Victoria.

First stop of the day was Gateway Estate.

Gateway Estate Yarra Valley

Run by Brett and his lovely wife Karen, Gateway Estate is a farm, cafe and local produce shop. This is a local business which Brett runs in conjunction with his brother. His Father also lives on the 110 acre property.

Brett and Karen from Yarra Valley Gateway Estate

I have driven past this roadside stall many times without stopping. I won’t be making that mistake again. This is a great place to pick up local produce and supplies including beef, pasta, tea, jams, pickles, spices, fruit and veg.

Shop

You can visit their on site greenhouse for a small amount of u-pick strawberries all year around. You can also purchase frozen, local berries which are often hard to come by at this time of year.

Gateway Estate started out as a wholesale market with a thriving business growing and selling Capsicum. A roadside stall was eventually added to sell their tomato crop and the business has evolved naturally from there. A lot of other local producers also now sell through the shop.

It now exists as one of the best displays of Yarra Valley produce in the one spot.

and more. Visit their website for more information.

On the day I visited these gorgeous Cara Cara oranges were on display. With a very brief growing season they are only available for a short time. They were rich orangey red in colour and sweetly piquant in taste.

Yarra Valley Cara Cara Oranges

Brett was kind enough to take us for a tour of his growing sheds, the true heart of his business. We saw rows upon rows of strawberry plants in the u-pick strawberry growing room.

Gateway Estate strawberries

From there our tour we moved to the herb room. These basil plants look like little obedient herby soldiers, yes? Ready to obey your every cooking request.

Gateway Estate basil

Gateway Estate also produce a massive capsicum crop.

Yarra Valley Gateway Estate also has a cafe onsite and we were treated to a delicious egg and bacon roll and a cup of Yarra Valley Tea Co tea.

Gateway Estate Cafe Yarra Valley

Visit for a toasted egg, cheese and bacon roll using local ingredients. $9.50

Chunky Beef pie $5.95 , a sausage roll, or a lovely selection of filled donuts $3-$3.50.  Visit the Yarra Valley Gateway Estate Facebook page for more information.

All up we had a wonderful morning in a lovely venue.  This really is great, local, lovingly produced Australian produce at its best. How could you possibly say no to that?

Cockatoo Country Market

Cockatoo Country Market
eatmystreet.net

This article is written by Eat My Street, but first appeared in the newspaper The Local.

The very first Cockatoo Country Market was held on Saturday 7th of March. Launched by locals, Tanya Burmeister and Owen Doppler, the artisan market is proudly “local” with all goods being grown, produced or made by the stall holders.

Market stall at cockatoo country market
eatmystreet.net

Owen and Tanya launched the market in a bid to drive more tourist traffic through their beloved  town of Cockatoo and to build an increased sense of community identity. The market is run by a committee of volunteers and they hope to eventually be able to return profits made back to local community groups.

I wound my way through the scenic hills early on the Saturday morning to find myself there for the “official opening” of the market by Mayor Leticia Wilmott and Councillor Brett Owen. The local fire brigade were also there provide a happy backdrop to the official cutting of the ribbon.

This is a market that is embedded firmly in its locale and the presence of the fire brigade only served to cement that feeling. Stall holders and dignitaries all gathered together at 8.45 to officially launch the market and there was a fantastic energy in the crowd.

Stall holders included Cockatoo Creek Farm Produce, Embellished Cakes, Leanne’s Custom Pots, Olivetto Estate, Emmabrooke Images, Grantelle Creative Scrap Metal Sculptures, Dog gone Healthy Dog treats and many more.

As I made my way around the market I got chatting to the lovely Marina from Blackwood and Leverett. Marina has recently found herself finishing up work and has decided to pursue her hobby of making beautifully coloured jewellery and ceramics. Marina lives in Cockatoo and so the launch of Cockatoo Country Market came at exactly the right time to assist her pursue her hobby. Stop by her stall for a visit at the next market and I am sure you will have trouble leaving without buying a little something for your home.

Overall this was a fantastic market with a good mix of stalls. It is ably assisted by the stunning backdrop of Cockatoo Creek, the surrounding pristine mountain range and even the ever popular Puffing Billy on occasion.

When Tanya and Owen first came up with the idea of the Market 9 months ago, they hope that it would help bring their local community together to network and socialise and show off what their naturally beautiful town had to offer.  With more than 900 people coming through the gates on market day, I think they can confidently say they have achieved that.

Friday Phone in| Fun Things I’d love to do in Berwick & beyond. The Friday Phone in

So we have manned the phones, checked the town noticeboard and scanned the Parish Newsletter. The votes are in for our Friday Favourites and top tips for the weekend.

1. Bastille Day

Tuesday 14th July is Bastille Day. You can celebrate in style right here in Melbourne.

  • Big Spoon Little Spoon, in Warragul is putting on a 6 course degustation dinner for $60. Includes a glass of French Champagne on arrival. Here for details.
  • La Baguette Cafe in Berwick are celebrating again this year. Good food, live music, bubbles and fun. Last year I bought a delicious Croquembouche and the atmosphere was sparkly! Here for bookings.
  • Alliance Francais de Melbourne are having an open day and family treasure hunt in St Kilda. Race against the clock and follow clues to win great prizes. C’est Amusant!
  • Cafe de Beaumarchais  High Tea. $50 pp. 1pm and 3pm.

2. Cameo Cinema in Belgrave seems like the perfect place to visit in this cold weather. You could visit on Tuesday for cheap tickets, or Saturday & Wednesday to see the classics. “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn,” as long as you do it in style at Cameo.

3. Belgrave Big Dreams Market is on tomorrow. Plus there is an African Dance Workshop being run near by. Great little market, click here for the review. Belgrave Big Dreams Market

4. Raynors Stone Fruit Orchard in Woori Yallock is dripping with fruit. Kiwi, lemon, guava, lime & tamarillo. They offer a u-pick option that seems to include a ride on the tractor! They also run fruit bottling workshops.

fruits-599478_1280

5. Evolve Fine Food Store. After my little post on 8 Family Friendly Cafes in Berwick and Beyond, I was enthusiastically told to add Evolve Fine Food Store to my list. Broadsheet has posted their review here. 64-68 Monbulk Rd, Belgrave. Lunch anyone?

6. This Friday 17th July @ 7.30pm I will be going to “Ten Poems Gently Fall” at Earthly Pleasures Cafe in Belgrave. I am very excited. Local performance poet Cameron Semmens is launching his latest book.  Musician Rod Gear  is launching a music album “As Gently Falls.” So many creative people in one place! Entry is free. Will I see you there?

7. Follow the Chocolate Road.

pfalstersteine-602421_1280

Berwick Gluten Free and Chocolates is a speciality chocolate shop. Stop in for a gift pack or take home goodie bag (not open on Sunday).  From there you ice-cream-702938_1280could follow the chocolate road to Chocolate Sensation in Belgrave, for a light lunch, or Gino’s ah’ cioccolato for some Churro’s.  Onward to Cafe de Beaumarchais in Sassafras for a sweet, oozy hot chocolate and maybe some cake. Hyped up on sugar and feeling adventurous? You could aim for the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery in Yarra Glen. The ultimate destination for Chocolate lovers. Otherwise wander up the road in Sassafras, stopping to toast a marshmallow, and then shop until you drop at The Olinda Sweet Company.

Buy me some pear drops, pretty please?

8. It really seems the  right time of year for some slow cooked recipes. What with all the tall tales about cold conditions.

9.  Weather such as this calls for a cosy cafe. I recently put out the plea for recommendations of cafes to visit that have an open fire. My street-ers obliged (you are always in the know) with this great list. Feel free to keep adding to it please!

What do you think? Do you know of any other great things to do in our area this week?

Have fun whatever it is you do.

Family Friendly Cafes in Berwick and Beyond

Family Friendly Cafes in Berwick and Beyondeatmystreet.net

Ever wanted to get out of the house for a coffee, but hesitated because you could not think of somewhere that the kids would be happy? I definitely have. I have three gorgeous, noisy children of varying ages,  so when I am looking for a child friendly cafe, I am very fussy.

Berwick is a fantastic, family-friendly suburb, we do family friendly like nowhere else. A lot of the local cafes will happily accommodate you and your little one. But if you really want a cafe where the kids can kick back, hang out and make noise, then here are my picks for the best. You might even spot a Kangaroo, a macaroon or a skate park while you are there.

9. Evolve Fair Food Store in Belgrave.

A gorgeous kids menu and a play room out the back. This place is perfect for Mum’s and the little ones.

8. Trail mix Cafe at Lysterfield Lake Park.

Lysterfield Lake Park
Spot the Kangaroos @eatmystreet.net

This cafe sits on the edge of Lysterfield Lake Park. It is surrounded by walking paths, bike tracks, trees, kangaroos and a stunning lake view. The Cafe is set inside the bike shop and is not fancy or even well decorated but the location is ah-maa-zing. Pop in for a coffee, toasted sandwich  or Banana and Nutella toasted wrap.

The kids can run and play in the park while you sip a take away tea or coffee in the park.

Horswood Rd entrance, Narre Warren North.

UPDATE

The Trail Mix Cafe is now permanently closed, but thanks to the opening of the amazing Bunjil Place in Narre Warren I have a new suggestions.

Bunjil Place Cafe is a recently opened, contemporary cafe serving Syndicate coffee in the foyer of the new Bunjil Place building.

Plenty of room is available in the outside area for families to sit and get comfortable and little ones to roam around with a range of cakes, burgers, sandwiches, pastries and more on offer to tempt your tastebuds.

7. Piggery Cafe, Sherbrooke.

Piggery Cafe Sassafras

So much perfection going on at the Piggery Cafe; beautiful cakes & breads, delicious menu, perfect coffee, gorgeous view, breathtaking setting. There is also an outdoor play/construction area, bocce green & a view of pigs & emus. This is all let down by the fact that it can be very busy and you might not get a place at the table. Charming service can also get a little frayed at the edges with all the busy-ness. But, this is Shannon Bennet’s beautiful property and it oozes passion, creativity and inspiration.

1 Sherbrooke Rd, Sherbrooke.

6. Providore Patisserie Cafe, Berwick South. Locals seem to love the food and coffee here. The cafe itself  is quite small and there is not a lot of   room to sit and enjoy your food.  The only view is a carpark on one side and a supermarket on the other. But, there is a little playground out the front of this strip of shops. Couple this with the fact that all the French inspired  food is made by hand and you might start to understand why it is so popular. When the weather is right, visit here for take away macaroons, pastries, cold pressed juices or cakes. Sit out the front while the kids have a play and enjoy.

1 O’Shea Rd, Berwick South.

5. Kallista Tea Rooms. Kallista Tea Rooms has a beautiful children’s menu, small play area with toys and drawing materials for the kids. Not to mention the gorgeous setting with easy spotting of birdlife and if you are lucky, a local lyrebird. This cafe is surrounded by majestic trees and the ever popular Grant Picnic Ground is near by. After you have finished your morning tea you might like to go for a wander around the local Kallista shops. A visit to enchanting Epoche is a must for hand made dolls, eco friendly wooden toys, felt toys, gifts, books & collectables.

103 Monbulk Rd, Kallista

4. Primary @Pioneer Park, Berwick.

BerwickGreat menu and coffee in a elegant building that used to house the local primary school. It is set in the heart of Berwick Village, on the town green. The cafe has a wall of glass that opens out onto a sweeping deck with chairs, tables and a view of the  local playground. Take a seat, enjoy the sun and watch the kids play on the play equipment while you order from the yummy menu. Good coffee, efficient service and delicious cakes and food. Set in an old school building, locals love Primary @Pioneer Park for a very good reason.

Cnr Lyall Rd and Peel St, Berwick.

3. Homestead Cafe @ The Old Cheese Factory Berwick.

Homestead Cafe Berwick

Beautiful surrounds, a Playground on site, a children’s menu and even High Tea for kids. Keep an eye on the opening hours though as Homestead Cafe has limited opening hours during the week and is only open two Saturdays per month.

2. Pane Di Fiore Bakery, Narre Warren North.

Pane Di Fiore Bakery Narre Warren North

I go here all the time with my family. Pane Di Fiore makes the most delicious cakes, pies and pasties including chocolate eclairs that are to die for. I also really like their simple but strong coffee and one of my favourite op shops is near by. Grab a Nutella Donut, a coffee or a sandwich. Sit inside or outside. Bring your bike and scooter and then tootle on down to the nearby playground and skate park. It is a short walk with a gorgeous back drop and a bench seat at the end of it with your name on it.

Emerald Bakery Cafe1. Emerald Bakery Cafe. Spacious and with a great selection of hot or cold food, sandwiches, breads, cakes and cookies. Stay for as long as the children will allow, then take a short walk to the local playground that sits next to the Puffing Billy Train Station. The Sweet Station  lolly shop is also across the road and when the weather turns nasty we all love to visit the local Emerald Library.

So that is my top Eight! The best cafes to take your kids to so that you can have a coffee while the kids have some fun.  I would love to make it top ten so please let me know your ideas for the last two…..

Have fun.

The Friday Phone In| Things to do in Berwick & beyond.

The Friday Phone in

So we have manned the phones, checked the town noticeboard and scanned the Parish Newsletter. The votes are in for our Friday Favourites and top tips for the weekend.

Are you wondering what is on in Berwick and beyond this weekend? Despite the fact that the cold weather has really set in here in Melbourne, there are still heaps of great things to do this weekend in Berwick & beyond.

1. The ever sweet Cockatoo Country Market is on this weekend. Full of locallyIMG_2686 grown, made or produced items you can also be served Devonshire tea, hot coffee or a freshly made bacon and egg roll. Plus this Saturday Nat Pike and Megan Nelson will be busking. I love a bit of live busking. Be there. 🙂 Check out this article written for the Local paper by none other than Madame eatmystreet herself, for more details.

2. The Grow it, Make it, Bake it Market in Emerald turns 1. They are celebrating and you are invited! There will be balloons, cake and Babaji’s Kitchen will be serving food. Plus craft for the kids, Embellished Cakes and more. Why not stop by, wish them a happy birthday and join in the fun.

3. Burrinja Circus Festival is on all weekend. It includes “Burrinja Circus Presents Lost” on Saturday night. Click here to find out more.

4. Mount Baw Baw has snow! Melbourne’s closest downhill ski resort has snow. It also has 35 hectares of downhill terrain, 10km of cross country ski trails and 7 lifts. Pack your 16 layers of snow gear and go enjoy.

5. Looking for something good to do with the family this weekend? Then why FullSizeRendernot try a visit to Puffing Billy. Plus, this Saturday night they have a Dinner & Dance Train running. $112 pp for a 3 course meal. Aces! 6. I say this is perfect weather for watching a movie. I’m thinking Cinderella at home in front of the fire, or Minions at Cameo Cinema. Or maybe both! Suggestions for any non kids films are very welcome.

As always, if there is anything I have missed, pop it in the comments either here or on Facebook.

Top three family friendly things to do in Emerald and Surrounds.

Top three family friendly things to do in Emerald and Surrounds.family friendly things to do in Emerald

So school holidays are here and what better way to celebrate and spur you onto greatness, than with a list of “the top three family friendly things to do in Emerald and surrounds.” Let’s go.

Puffing billy railway Emerald
eatmystreet.net

Now, finding family friendly things to do is harder than you might think. The clue is in the wording. Family and friendly. So the whole family has to enjoy it. I can think of  many things that leave me completely cold, but that my kids  love doing.  Hanging out at a public swimming pool and visiting a busy playground being two of them. I can also easily think of things that give me a thrill, that leave my kids feeling bored and restless. I present; attending art auctions and and lingering in antique shops. Been there, done that, it did not go well.

So I am well pleased with myself when I manage to find things that we can all  do together, and all enjoy.

Here is my list of Top Three Family Friendly Activities in Emerald and Surrounds.

1. See Puffing Billy or be seen on Puffing Billy

FullSizeRender
eatmystreet.net

So a lot of people love to step aboard the elegant old Puffing Billy for a day. They sit in her open window, legs dangling down the side, waving as she swishes along. She will tour you through the Dandenong Ranges and past some of the most gorgeous, luscious scenery as you go. Riding aboard Puffing Billy is great fun and the small ones will be smitten.

You probably won’t want to do climb aboard more than once a year though. But if you have already been on the train this year, this does not mean you need to wave her adieu. Try coming to Emerald, Gembrook or Belgrave for a day trip. Bring a picnic, or visit one of the great Cafe’s on offer. Take your kids to the local playground or explore a walking track. Then when the time is right,  visit one of the Historic train stations and watch her swish by.

Puffing Billy railway Emerald

So my tip is, visit Emerald, park your car somewhere in the town. Grab a coffee & sandwich from The Emerald Bakery, tootle down to the playground with your children and let them have fun while you sip your coffee and get lulled into contemplation or conversation, by the gorgeous scenery. Then when you hear that iconic whistle, head down to the train track and watch the gorgeous Puffing Billy steam by.

From there you could take a walk through sweet Emerald Village, or take one of the sweeping tracks that follows alongside the train.

After you have gone for a brisk walk, you might like to stop by Elevation at Emerald, for a family friendly lunch or dinner, with more amazing views.

Day sorted. 🙂

2. Visit Emerald Lake Park.

Emerald Lake Park
eatmystreet.net

Emerald Lake Park is such a beautiful, peaceful spot. I have written before about how it is one of my “happy places.” Luckily for me, my kids really like it too. The Lake sits right in the middle of the park and depending on the season, it will afford you the choice of walking, paddle boating, running, gazing, swimming, listening to jazz, fishing or meandering.

Emerald Lake Park
Kookaburra, wild mushroom, paddle boats.

Puffing Billy also has a station here too and you can see her run through the edge of the park. If you are mad keen on trains then you might like to drop into the miniature railway museum. Otherwise there are a couple of different playgrounds to visit including one with outdoor gym equipment.

There are also walking tracks criss crossing their way throughout the park. If you are lucky you might lock eyes with a Kookaburra.

Take your camera, a picnic and a treasure box for collecting, and be there.

3.Now this is a special one for slightly older children. Ever dreamed of being an Astronaut? Well a visit to Mount Burnett Observatory might be the next best thing.

Mt Burnett Observatory
eatmystreet.net

Nestled just outside of Emerald,  in picturesque Mount Burnett, is the Southern Hemispheres only community run and owned observational telescope. Originally built in 1974 by Monash University for the use of their Physics department, the telescope was handed over the group of amateur astronomers in early 2011 to be opened to the public in 2012.

Once a month they run the Young Observers Program, but there is something happening at the Observatory every Friday night. Entry is free for members, but visitors are welcome if you book in advance. Visiting the Observatory is such a unique, exciting and educational experience,  for young and old alike. Plus the volunteer members are friendly, their enthusiasm is contagious and they are willing to share their chocolate biscuits.

Now I was a little nervous about attending the Observatory for the first time. You could say I  was scared that the massive black hole that is my knowledge of Astronomy, might be publicly outed. But, this did not happen. In fact they seemed to not mind that I am a dolt. At the least, they were not surprised. So give it a try, I think it was an amazing and unique experience and I had fun! I think that you will have fun too. Who wouldn’t be excited about the opportunity to take a sneak peek into space?

star gazing Emerald

So I hope you and your whole family are able to find something fun, adventurous and interesting to do in Emerald and Surrounds.

Enjoy your holidays, and let me know how you go on your adventure.

Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch

Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch-3 Today I attended the Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch. Held in honour of the Winter Solstice, the Yarra Valley’s Shortest Lunch showcases fifteen of the smaller wineries in the Yarra Valley, with wine, music and food. I was invited by the gorgeous folk at The Yarra Ranges Herb Farm, who just happen to be two of my best friends. I was so pleased they asked as the day was fantastic, the weather was gorgeous and the backdrop was breathtaking. Honestly, the whole place was just showing off really.

Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch
Seville Hill Winery

See what I mean? The idea of the shortest lunch is that you visit as many wineries as you would like, stopping at each one to sample the wine and have a small entree sized meal. We had a plan, beautifully curated by the Yarra Ranges Herb Farm and we stuck to it. First stop of the day was Brumfield Winery. This is a small, family run winery but they certainly know how to entertain. We ordered coffee, and toasted sandwiches for the kids and ate them while sitting outside watching the sun burn up the last of the mornings fog. There was also live music playing inside and a “cork throwing game” for the kids. Fun!

Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch

Payne’s Rise

Then we took a quick drive to Payne’s Rise where I was immediately blown away by the most amazing scenery before we even got to the car park. Payne’s Rise is something special and the proprietors had really pulled out all the stops for the day. There were small enclosed fires burning outside for warmth, there was giant Jenga for the kids, outdoor tables, live music, amazing food and of course wine. I was served by the most charming gent with his 12 month old baby watching on. She smiled at me. A lot. All the gorgeousness in one place. The wine was delish. My baguette with pulled pork and slow was amazing. The kids played happily. I wanted to walk into one of the gorgeous timber buildings that dot the property and  refuse to leave. Still thinking about that idea, I will keep you posted.

Click to add a blog post for Paynes Rise on Zomato
Yarra Valley Shortest LunchPayne’s Rise has a gorgeous path that cuts up the back of their property into the Seville Hill Winery. Here there were meals being served in a huge outdoor shed that was heavy and cosy and bustling. Outside there were gardens and more amazing views so the adults split their time between staring at view/watching children wrestle and tasting wine/having uninterrupted conversation. Mr Eatmystreet mentioned something about a delicious Cherry Cider but I had been distracted by the stylings of a Reserve Chardonnay. So I think a second visit is required to try me some of that liqueur.

Last stop was the elegant Five Oak’s Vineyard where we were served Sweet Pancakes, Hot Chocolate and sunset tinged views.

Five Oaks Vineyard
Five Oaks Vineyard @eatmystreet

The Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch runs for the whole weekend so you can still drop by to anyone of the 15 wineries that are throwing their doors open for the special weekend. Souvenir glasses cost $15 and entree sized meals ranged from $7 to $15. Some of the wineries have children’s meals on offer.  I loved getting out and discovering these beautiful wineries that are right on our doorstep. I look forward to seeing more next year. Until then you will probably be able to spot me wandering the property and eating cheese at Payne’s Rise. Their cellar door is open Thursday to Sunday.

Have you had a chance to check out the Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch? If so, what was your favourite winery? I’d love to hear from you in the comments here or on Facebook. Happy Eating. Dani B xx

This weekend is looking fantastic with a lot of Winter Solstice festivities going on. It may even be as good as last weekend, which frankly I thought was unbeatable. Here is a little recap of my time at #VoicesofAu last weekend.

Onward.

1. The Belgrave Lantern Parade is on this weekend and the Hills are alive with the sounds of lantern making. This will be the 9th annual lantern parade, that is held to mark the Winter Solstice. The Parade starts at 5.30pm from Hayes Carpark. People are excited! They are making their own lanterns. The lanterns look amazing. A not to be missed local event say I. Go here for more information.

2. I have the privilege of attending the Yarra Valley Shortest Lunch this weekend. Fifteen of the Yarra Valley’s smaller wineries throw open their doors to celebrate winerythe Winter Solstice weekend. Entry is $15 which is paid at the first winery that you attend and which will also reward you entry to all wineries and a souvenir glass to use at every other winery you visit. Proceeds from these glasses will go toward the local CFA, so good things all around. The Yarra Vally Shortest Lunch is about progressive eating and all day dining (sounds perfect) so you can chose a couple of your favourite wineries and visit them or aim for the stars and visit all 18. There will be music and much smiling. Families are welcome. The Yarra Valley is such a beautiful area and I can’t wait to visit some of the sweet little wineries that dot the sweeping hillside. Bliss. For bookings or more information check here.

3. Markets. The Emerald Market is on again this Sunday.  It runs out the front of the Emerald Community House at 356 Belgrave-Gembrook Rd, Emerald. Home to my favourite market stall ever, The Artisan Crust, they also have hot food, organic produce and craft. Not to mention the stunning backdrop of the surrounding countryside, great local cafes and a sweet community feel.

4. Dining. So many options to chose from, although not many with an open fireplace. How I long for a restaurant with a fireplace at this time of year. On my wish list is French restaurant La Voltaire Bistro Francais in Belgrave and Big Spoon Little Spoon in Warragul (update 2017. Now closed). Big Spoon, Little Spoon have just won the Hospitality & Accommodation gong at the Baw Baw Excellence Awards 2015. If you have visited either of these I would love to hear what you think…. Still just a dreamingdream for me at the moment.

5. Reading. My favourite blog of the moment is from my lovely new friend Tonia over at toniawithaneye.com. This girls is funny and gorgeous and she used to work with Bert Newton! What more could you want. Stop by her blog and say “Hi.” You are sure to leave with a smile on your face.

So, what have I missed? Lots, I am sure. Please feel free to add your ideas into the comments below.  I love to hear from my readers. And if you find a restaurant with an open fire, I must know about it. Pretty please? fire

Brunch @ Impodimo Cafe, Garfield.

Impodimo Cafe, 101 Nar Nar Goon – Longwarry Rd, Garfield 3814

What better way to enjoy a public holiday here in Melbourne than to head off in search of new adventure. The sun was shining and the vibes were good (we had all slept in, Yay!). Normally encumbered by three mini eatmystreeters, today we only had two. Mid sized Master eatmystreet was hanging with his cousin, telling silly stories and trying to get away with random rude word usage. Successfully I believe!

The rest of us hit that Freeway, heading East toward the green, rolling hills of Gippsland. The Madden brothers came too, although only offering us their voices on this sad occasion, and not their actual presence.  Sing along anyone?

I had done some sleuthing the previous day and spotted a little cafe called Impodimo, in Garfield. It sounded intriguing but best of all it was getting some sweet reviews and some awesome foodie pics. We wound our way through green hilly pastures and came quickly upon the cutest little town you ever did see.

We were pleasantly surprise to find the sweet looking Impodimo Cafe at one end, the amazing Cannibal Creek Bakehouse at the other, and a horse drawn cart in the middle. I kid you not.

Impodimo Cafe is set within a beautiful white weatherboard house with pressed tin walls and it shares the premises with a gorgeous gift shop. The cafe has three separate rooms for eating in and we were lucky enough to be seated in the sun drenched room at the front of the house.

We were here for brunch so we ordered the “Famous fig, banana and walnut bread for two” @ $11. Other options included “French Toast” for $16.50 or “Eggs your way” for $10.50. “Roasted strawberry granola with fresh apple” for $10.50 also took my fancy, but so did a lot of the other things on the menu. There was even something for the little ones “Farmers Kid. Poached egg and bacon on sourdough toast” @ $6.50. Alas my non-farmers kid’s wanted cookies and so a blue melting moment cookie it was.

But look at all these other delightful options from the counter.

Cake at Impodimo cafe Garfield

Our coffee’s were a reasonable $3.50 and I am told that the coffee was a house blend from Coffee Snobs. Service was friendly and we all loved Impodimo Cafe. coffee at Impodimo Cafe Garfield Not that I am obsessed, but check out that gorgeous coffee machine.

Afterward we got a little lost at the gorgeous giftstore next door and then we sauntered on down to the Cannibal bread from Cannibal Creek Bakehouse GarfieldCreek Bakehouse for some sourdough of our own. Here we found baker James Fisher working hard at his 110 year old woodfired oven, reportedly the only one of its kind in Gippsland. Cannibal Creek Bakehouse uses traditional baking methods and organic stone ground flour for their range of sour dough loaves. We purchased
a Sourdough loaf and also a Malted fruit bread with huge, luscious pieces of apricot and fig and generous smattering of nuts. The bread here is expensive but is also unique and unrecognisable when compared to supermarket bread. It can be purchased form the small unassuming shop at one end of the bakehouse.

I will leave the final word to this photo, just in case you did not believe me about the horse and cart. Garfield, Victoria

Pave Funfest Emerald 2015

My first time attending the Pave Funfest today. Good things worth mentioning. I met a robot, he could talk. He was pretty funny. photo 2 I heard the Melbourne Accordion Orchestra “The Big Squeeze”  in action. Pave Funfest Emerald

Artisan Crust were there and this time they had made macaron’s and baclava. They just keep getting better. photo

photo I got to see with my own eyes the old is new wine bar “The Hive.” Set up in the old Emerald Bakery and with many of its historic features still intact the venue was amazing, evocative and moody- and it talked! Only figuratively sorry, different to the robot. Emerald was busy and bustling and there were so many options for food and fun. photo My own random tinkler at one of the pianos set up around the town. There are still many activities planned for the coming week. Visit http://www.pave.org.au for more information. Maybe I’ll see you there! Dani xx
